Second World War period Canadian wireless set: the WS58 Mk1 was a tropicalised and waterproofed portable HF transceiver developed in Canada in 1943 for short-range R/T communications in forward areas, primarily for inter-battalion use, infantry patrols and paratroopers. It was simple to set up and operate, with separate tuning for receiver and sender. Range was up to 5 miles using a 12 foot rod aerial. This 'man-pack' radio was carried on the chest, with a separate battery pack and accessories carried on the back. History note The WS58 Mk 1 was a tropicalised and waterproofed portable HF transceiver developed and manufactured in Canada. It was introduced into service in 1943 (as a replacement for the No 18 Set) for short-range R/T communications in forward areas, primarily for inter-battalion use, infantry patrols and paratroopers. The set was simple to set up and operate, with separate tuning for receiver and sender. It had a 6-ft rod aerial, CW and RT transmission, and its frequency range was 6 to 9 Mc/s. Power output was 0.25 watts. Range (CW) 4 miles : (RT) 2.5 miles (range was up to 5 miles using a 12 foot rod aerial). This 'man-pack' radio was carried on the chest, with a separate battery pack and accessories carried on the back. |
