A la fin de 1956 les Allemands et les Français signent les accords de Colomb Bechar par lequel il est prévu entre autre la construction d'un char moyen de combat franco-allemand. Les premières réunions ont lieu rapidement début 1957 , le 12 janvier à Bonn.La fiche programme est établie. Le char sera un char moyen de 30 t équipé d’un canon capable de tirer l’obus G à charge creuse pouvant percer tout blindage entre 2000 et 2500 mètres. En 1958 l’Italie rejoint le programme. Dans sa phase de définition le moteur choisi sera un Maybach de 1000 chevaux qui était destiné aux chars AM X. 50 et au char Lorraine de 25 t. Toutefois le poids du char qui arrive presque à 40 t rend ce moteurs totalement obsolète et oriente le choix vers un moteur Sofam112 G. S. de 750 chevaux. Deux prototypes doivent être construits par les Français. Ils se présentent avec des tourelles et des amenagements intérieurs différents notamment la conduite de tir. Le prototype numéro 1 sort des chaînes en septembre 1960 et est essayé à Rambouillet en février 61 mais le programme a déjà du plomb dans l’aile car les allemands décident d’équiper leur engin du canon britannique de105 mm en lieu et place du canon allemand de 105 mm Rheinmetall pouvant tirer l’obus G.
Il y a aussi une divergence sur le moteur. Les essais continuent toutefois et se terminent en avril 1961. La France continue des études et décide de lancer une fabrication de 7 chars de présérie un peu plus légers mais mieux blindés.
Et elle lança même temps des études pour un moteur polycarburant Hispano Suiza de 720 chevaux.
En juillet 1961 le prototype numéro 2 sort à son tour des chaînes et les essais tripartites commencent en octobre 62 à Mailly le Camp. Des derniers essais tripartites ont lieu à l’automne 63 à Mailly et a Meppen en Allemagne. C’est un constat d’échec chaque pays reprend ses billes et décide de construire son propre char
Il n y aura pas de char européen
l’Italie la Belgique et les Pays-Bas intéressés dans un premier temps par l’AMX 30 achètent finalement le Léopard

At the end of 1956 a French and German agreement was signed in Columbus Bechar by which it is intended, among other things the construction of a mdeium tank Franco-German combat. The first meetings are held quickly in early 1957, the 12th Jan.in Bonn.

Two prototypes were built by the French. They have turrets with differents amenagements including firing guide . The prototype No. 1 is ready on September 1960 and was tried in Rambouillet in February 61 but the programme has already lead in the wing when Germany decide to equip their tank with the British gun of 105 mm instead of the German canon Rheinmetall 105 mm able to fire the G shell.
There is also a divergence upon the engine. Tests, however, continue and finish in April 1961. France continues studies, and decided to launch a pre batch of 7 tanks lighter but better armoured
And she started in the same time studies for a Flexible Hispano Suiza engine of 720 HP.
In July 1961 the prototype number 2 is ready and he began tripartite test in October 62 in Mailly Camp The last tripartite trials are held in the fall at 63 at Mailly and Meppen in Germany. It is an acknowledgement of failure and each country takes its ball and decides to build its own tank
