Pour répondre à certaines normes de défense des aérodromes militaires fixées par l’OTAN, le Gouvernement belge, début des années 1980, prit la décision d’améliorer les défenses active et passive de ses bases par la création d’unités pourvues de nouveaux moyens anti-aériens. C’est ainsi que des VADS (Vulcan Air Defense System) furent achetés et les premiers Commandos de l’air (2) formés.
Le Vulcan est un canon rotatif à 6 tubes de type gattling commandé électriquement. Il est monté sur un affût tracté à 2 roues. La rotation en azimut et élévation de l’affût s’effectuait grâce à un système hydraulique. Le VADS peut aussi bien tirer sur des objectifs aériens que terrestres et la cadence de tir est impressionnante. Quatre servants étaient nécessaires pour sa mise en œuvre.
Comme pour beaucoup de matériel belge, les restrictions budgétaires mirent fin à la carrière des VADS et actuellement seul le système de tir sol-air Atlas portant 2 missiles Milan est utilisé par le Flight de Défense antiaérienne (SHORAD – SHOrt Range Air Defense).
Le canon Vulcan a été monté pour la première fois sur l’intercepteur F-104 Starfighter. Il est toujours utilisé sur blindés (M113, M163, V-150, V-300 ), sur avions de chasse (F-15, F-16), sur avions militaires de transport (C-130) et sur navires. Certaines nations dont le Japon utilisent le Vulcain à tir assisté par radar.

To meet certain standards of defense of the military aerodromes fixed by NATO, the Belgian Government, in the beginning of heigteens , made the decision to improve defense active and passive of its bases by the creation of units equipped with new anti-aircraft means.
Thus VADS (Vulcan Air System Defense) were bought and the first Commandos of the air drilled (2).
Vulcan is a rotary gun gattling type, with 6 tubes with electric control. It is assembled on a tractor drawn mounting with 2 wheels. Rotation in azimuth and rise in the mounting was possible thanks to a hydraulic system.
The VADS can as well draw for aerials target as terrestrial and the rate of shooting is impressive.
Four servers were necessary in the action.
As for much of Belgian material, the budgetary restrictions stop the career of the VADS and currently only the system of ground-to-air shooting Atlas carrying 2 Milan missiles is used by the Flight of Anti-aircraft defence (SHORAD - Shorts Arrange Air Defense).
