C’est le dernier avatar de ce char vraiment spécial

Le programme de modernisation démarra en 1986 afin de modifier le système de contrôle de tir qui faisait cruellement défaut
Dans le même temps un char par peloton reçut une lame Dozer
En 1987 1988 le moteur Roll Royce fut remplacé par un moteur Detroit Diesel de 290 Cv . Des réservoirs auxiliaires furent adjoints sur chaque cote du char
Au début des années 90 il était prévu d’appliquer des blindage réactif mais la fin de vie opérationnelle du char fut planifié en 1997 lorsque le Léopard 2 arriva en corps de troupe . Il ne fut utilisé ensuite que très peu de temps comme char d’entraînement
ce char aurait du avoir un successeur en la personne du STRV 2000
Historique
A la fin des années 80 il est clair que les chars Strv 101R, 102R, 103C and Strv 104 seront obsolètes et devront être remplacés
les Suédois étudient donc des la fin des années 60 un nouveau type de char d’un concept aussi révolutionnaire que le char S en son temps
Plusieurs types d’ engins furent étudiés afin de parvenir au concept final
En partant des leçons du char S il fut réalisé 3 types d’engins Les UDES 03 , UDES 19 et UDES XX20

Le UDES 03 est un mulet qui étudie le concept d’un char avec un canon monté sur le châssis sans tourelle . les tests prouvent la validité de ce concept qui est développé avec le UDES 19 qui voit un châssis de Marder allemand être choisi pour test un armement de 105 mm monté en superstructure.

On arrive ainsi au UDES XX20 qui est mis au point à compter de 1981 . C’est un engin basé sur le Hägglunds BV 206 et qui possède un canon de 120mm

Avec son poids de 25 tonnes il possède une bonne mobilité

2 concepts sont étudiés
1° avec un canon sans tourelle

2° avec une tourelle compacte et peu visible . Ce char atteint un poids de 55n tonnes avec un blindage modulaire pouvant être facilement modernisé
Le canon de 140 mm a chargement automatique ne peut toutefois tirer que des obus APFSDS
il possède un canon coaxial de 40 mm pouvant tirer des obus APFSDS et HE ou une mitrailleuse 7,62 mm Ksp m/39

Un modèle en bois est construit mais très rapidement les études montrent que ce char va atteindre un coût prohibitif et que l achat d’un char étranger est plus censé

1989 1990 la décision est prise d’acheter un char sur étagère . la compétition met en concurrence les Leclerc M1A1 and Léopard 2 et le vainqueur sera le Léopard 2.

An upgrade program was started in 1986 to fit all vehicles with dramatically improved fire control systems. Also, each S-tank was fitted with a dozer blade, rather than just one per platoon. A further upgrade in 1987/88 replaced the Rolls-Royce engine with a newer 290 hp (216 kW) Detroit Diesel with additional fuel tanks, and added a new laser rangefinder. There was some consideration of adding both reactive and/or appliqué armour in the early 1990s, but in the end the S-Tank was instead phased out of Swedish service in favour of the Leopard 2, which started arriving in 1997. The last year in which the S-tank were used to train tank crews was 1997.
