Entre 1975 et 1977 les Léopards des lots 1à 4 furent modernisés avec l'adjonction d'un sublindage sur la tourelle ainsi que sur le bouclier du Canon Le poids en ordre de Bataille passa à 42.4 tonnes
Ces chars furent désignés sour le Termes de Léopard 1A1A1 et ceux qui nt recut le systeme SEM 80/90 en Léopard 1A1A3
Par la suite certains léopard 1A1A1 vont recevoir un système de visée zusatzgepanzerten PzB200 . Ainsi équipés la vision de nuit sera améliorée . ils furent appelés Léopard 1A1A2
