Designed as a medium-range air defense weapon, the Tartar was deployed as the primary AA weapon of destroyers, and the secondary AA weapon of cruisers. Associated equipment included the Mark 73/74 gun and guided missile director, and the AN/SPG-51 guidance radar. The Tartar was updated by the improvement of launch vessels' radar in readiness for Standard SM-2 adoption. The program, known as CG/SM-2 (ER), involved the fitting of AN/SPS-52 3-dimensional radar, AN/SPS-65 radar, and improved plotting equipment.
