Although Russia had previously used uniform clothing that was more practical for field service during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05, those worn during the First World War had been universally adopted from 1907. Officers wore a service dress of a peaked cap, the Kittel (jacket), and breeches of ‘Tsar green’ for dismounted personnel, tucked into high boots. For winter wear the greatcoat (Shinel) was worn and the Astrakhan cap of brown-grey was the prescribed order of dress.
