The bronze eagle, sculpted by Schmid-Ehmen, was one of two incorporated into the Reichs Chancellery in Berlin, designed by Hitler's Architect, Albert Speer, and was taken from the partially ruined building at the end of the war. It was first exhibited in public by the British Army of the Rhine at the 'Germany Under Control Exhibition' held after the Second World War, and from 26 October 1995 to 21 January 1996 in the 'Art and Power: art and architecture in Europe 1930-45' exhibition at the Hayward Gallery.
