L'évolution de l'AB41 fut décidée dès 1942 alors que les premiers engins arrivaient à peine en corps de troupe. Il fut décidé de rendre cet engin plus adapté aux plaines d’Afrique du Nord. La première modification fut l’augmentation la puissance du moteur et en même temps il fut décidé de renoncer au poste de double conduite et à l'armement défensif à l’arrière
Cet engin fut immédiatement commandé entre mai et juillet 1942 à 400 exemplaires.
Mais les événements en Afrique du Nord vont bousculer les prévisions .
Le Prototype dénommé AB42 fut donc construit à 1 exemplaire . L'antenne se trouvait déplacée à l'arrière droit les phares avant ont laissé la place à un phare unique au centre du glacis et une seule roue de secours prend place sur le côté droit du véhicule alors que le côté gauche reçoit des jerrycans. Ce modèle fut un modèle de transition . Il faut aussi décidé de construite un modèle AB 42 Commando pour les commandants de compagnie ; une commande de 150 engins avait même été passée .
Entre temps un modèle dérivé directement de l AB 41 est construit . C’est le modèle Ab43 qui est l’ultime avatar de cette série
La grosse différence entre les deux modèles est l’adoption d’une tourelle élargie étudiée pour le modèle de 42 et équipée d'un canon de 47/ 40.
Cette tourelle prévue pour la guerre dans le désert était beaucoup plus basse que celle de l’ AB41 sans fente d'aération sur les côtés .
On accédait à la tourelle par une trappe supérieure équipée de 2 portillons Comme l’AB41 l’engin possédait un double poste de conduite ; L’accès à ce poste se faisait toujours par deux portillons de style écurie Le plancher était protégé contre les mines et des DREB (défense rapprochées des engins blindés) étaient fixées sur l'arrière du châssis. Sur les garde-boue avant se trouvaient des supports de jerrycans
Le moteur reçoit un cerveau frein a partir du châssis 55784
La production de l’AB43 commençant après l'armistice donc le RE n' a pas pu prendre en compte ce type d 'engin. Les allemands firent fabriquer une version améliorée du Type 41 sous le nom de AB43 (les italiens la denomèrent Abm 43 ou AB41/43 pour la distinguer du prototype AB43 armée d'un canon de 47 mm qui avait été présentée en mai 1943) .60 furent construites en 1944 et 42 en 1945 plus quelques châssis incomplets bien loin des prévisions allemandes qui escomptaient sur 310 engins se decomposant en 240 armés de canon de 20 mm et 70 de canon de 47mm . L'engin extérieurement ressemble dont à l 'AB41 sauf pour la tourelle
Les engins survivants furent ensuite récupérés par les troupes italiennes et furent utilisés par les carabiniers et la Celere après la guerre
il a existé aussi une version ravitailleur de l’ AB 41 une version porte de munitions qui a rendu de grands services..

La tourelle ;
tout d'abord elle est beaucoup plus large et basse et son accès qui se fait par une trappe fermée par deux volets ; Elle ne possède pas de fente d aération comme sur la AB 41 . Vous trouverez aussi le support de la mitrailleuse antiaérienne Breda 38.
Le châssis
Sur le glacis avant le bouchon du réservoir a disparu car le réservoir a été éliminé mais il possède 2 supports de jerrycans sur les garde-boue
A l'arrière un dispositif de lance grenade fumigène (DREB) et un container abritant les fumigènes de réserve.Il était prevu un systeme de gonflage internes des pneux
Il y eu des études portant sur l adoption dans la tourelle des canons 50/38 allemand et 50/42 .
L’AB 43 de série aussi appelée AB4/43 pour pas la confondre avec le prototype italien avait un schéma de camouflage « ad amebe » c'est-à-dire avec un vert de base sur lequel des grosses taches marron tirant sur le rouge avait été disposées
Un filet de jaune sable courant entre les tâches séparait les deux nuances
Les pneumatiques de l'AB43 étaient du type Artiglio.
Cette auto mitrailleuse combattit pour la première fois avec les Allemands contre les Alliés qui avaient débarqué à Anzio.
